Goliath was a dreadful man
he hated our King Saul.
He interrupted morning prayers
was dreaded by us all.
It wasn’t just his fearful size
his long arm, sword or gaze.
His ghastly purpose was quite clear
to kill, destroy and raze.
.
Catching just a glimpse of him,
we Jews were very scared.
Our King hoped for a challenger
but no-one came who dared.
I thought I ought to have a go
I was indeed quite strong.
I’d killed some lions and bears alone
I sang a lovely song.
You see, I was a shepherd boy.
That’s all, until the choice
‘twas Samuel – he anointed me.
I grew then, found my voice.
I went to Court, Saul wanted me.
He was too ill to fight.
He said he’d lend me armour
to deflect Goliath’s might.
The armour looked too big for me,
until I tried it on.
It fitted like a glove at once
but Saul looked put upon.
He saw my coming destiny,
looked jealous, worried, fraught.
I took the armour off at once
“I’ll use my sling,” I thought.
Five pebbles merged, they were one stone
the right size for my hand.
I stepped towards Goliath then,
walked steady o’er the land.
Goliath stood, just rooted there
confused, he shouted hoarse.
“I’ll feed you to the cows, you’ll see!”
(They don’t eat meat of course!)
I said, “I’ll feed you to those birds.”
He tilted up his head.
I slung my stone to hit his brow
he fell face down, quite dead.
The Jews were thrilled, – Goliath dead?
He really was no more.
King Saul was smit with jealousy
to hear his army roar!

This is a very fun take on an old tale with some excellent rhymes which children can enjoy to see the story of David and Goliath afresh.

Thanks Emily. I do feel that Bible stories are part of our culture, and also that much great art is inaccessible without a knowledge of them.
