Hello! You like me, but I’m not sure I like you! It’s ok if you keep me as a pet, but some of you want to eat me, or use my skin and fur. Or do experiments on me. Would you like that?
But I do like snuggling up… Now you see why I am a good pet. You see, on my own, I can’t keep warm, but somehow, I have to. So, it’s best I’m not on my own. Also, another one of us might see something I don’t, and let me know. Though I think it’s best to keep quiet. I mean, suppose a …. Well, I don’t like to mention names, but it’s a stoat I’m talking about… suppose one of them hears you? Nasty vicious things!! No, it’s best to keep quiet.
Let’s talk about something else. I mostly stay in our warren as it’s safer there. But I do have to watch out for the Warren Queen: if she thinks there are too many of us, she will grab us by the neck and force us out. That means death. You can see why I keep out of her way.
I do go outside of course, I have to eat, don’t I? I go out with a friend at dawn and dusk to eat and jump and play. I am happy outside playing with my friend.
We run and jump about… and my long ears help me keep cool.
My friend helps keep a look-out with me. He looks one way and I look the other! We need to keep a look out – so many animals want to eat us! And you do too! We never go very far from our warrens – we might want to jump down them double-quick. Maybe a polecat, or another nasty vicious animal is after us. A polecat has a sense of smell so good that I try to keep out of their way. That’s hard. Once they smell me, they chase me, pounce on the back of my neck and bite… That’s it. ‘s no chance if someone does that to you.
Some of you people are glad that pole cats are on the increase. You wouldn’t be glad if you were one of us. You see they can come down our holes after us. Very scary. Now, I’ve told you about some bad things, – but not all – I don’t want to think about them – I might die of shock! I’d rather tell you about some good things. We do have a lot of fun, and we make beautiful nests for our little ones, which we girls line with our fur and cover with grass. It’s a good way to keep warm, don’t you think?
Who am I? Byee!
