Pretty Perie had a pot
of milk upon her head,
resting on a cushion there
as away she sped!
Down the path, towards the town
our dairymaid just thought
of all the money she would make
when her milk was bought.
She would buy a hundred eggs,
watch them hatch with care,
bring them up around the house
look out, stay aware!
“Foxy will not eat them all.
The others, I will sell.
I’ll buy a piggy, yes I will,
like others who do well!
Piggies don’t cost much to feed
and fatten up quite nice.
When he’s really round and plump
I’ll sell him at a price.
I’ll get a pretty sum for him
I’ll spend it on a cow
a cow with calf, indeed why not?
Or what about a sow?”
With happy thoughts and merry dreams
our milkmaid hopped and skipped.
The milk fell off, it drained away
The farmyard lost, she’d tripped!”
This farce is known to all who dream
of castles in the air.
In Spain perhaps, or somewhere else,
we know we’ve all been there!
Why is it that we have to wake
and come back from our dreams
to find ourselves still quite the same
and life just what it seems.
Why not read this out to your family, friends or perhaps in class?
